This handsome little mutt was called Marino, and he belonged to the family I stayed with during my gap year between school and university.
For one year I rented a room with them while doing project work, armed with my father’s camera and absolutely no idea what I was doing with it half the time. Thankfully, Marino was patient enough to tolerate my constant experimenting with photography.
He wasn’t a fancy pedigree dog. No polished Westminster Dog Show nonsense. Just a proper family dog with character, personality, and the sort of expression that suggested he’d seen me make several questionable life decisions already.
I ended up creating this pen-and-ink portrait as a thank-you gift for the family after they kindly put up with me for an entire year.
Frankly, Marino probably deserved some sort of medal for it.
