When I was younger, I spent a ridiculous amount of time around the local stables. Initially because I loved horses. Later because I discovered teenage girls also spent a ridiculous amount of time around the local stables. It’s important to be honest about these things.
The stables had a magnificent show jumper whose name, unfortunately, has vanished completely from my memory over the years. Which is a shame because the horse deserved better. Absolute athlete. Powerful, elegant, and considerably more disciplined than I ever managed to be at that age.
One evening I got to ride it bareback to the fields. What I didn't know was that it never waited for someone to open the gate! It just jumped and cleared it. I cleared the gate too but didn't manage to stay on the horse for the landing - OUCH!
Although this drawing isn’t taken directly from that horse, it was heavily inspired by it. I found a photograph of a similar horse that immediately brought all those memories flooding back - the smell of hay, muddy boots, freezing cold mornings, and trying to look far more experienced around horses than I actually was.This drawing turned out to be a genuine favourite with a lot of people, which I'm rather pleased about.
